In that sort of way money goes fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" data-block-type=\"core\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" data-block-type=\"core\">But one friend, who was a kind fellow, sent him an old trunk with the message: \u201cPack up and be off!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cYes,\u201d he remarkable trunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">As soon as you pressed the lock it could fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">He shut the lid and pressed the lock, and away flew the trunk up the chimney and into the clouds, higher and higher, with the merchant\u2019s son inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">Whenever the bottom of the trunk creaked he was terrified, for if the trunk fell to pieces he would have tumbled out, and that would not have been pleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" data-block-type=\"core\"><img loading=\"lazy\" town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">He could do this quite well, for in Turkey everyone goes about in dressing-gown and slippers, just as he did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">He met a nurse carrying a little child. \u201cI say, Turkish nurse,\u201d he called out, \u201cwhat is that great castle near the town, with the windows so high up?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cThe king\u2019s daughter lives there,\u201d said the nurse. \u201cIt has been foretold that she will be made very unhappy by a lover, and so no one is allowed to visit her unless the king and queen are present.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cThank you,\u201d said the merchant\u2019s son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">He went back to the forest,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">got into the trunk,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">flew up to the roof of the castle,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">and crept data-block-type=\"core\">She woke up and was very frightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">But the merchant\u2019s son told her he was a Turkish angel who had come down through the air to visit her, and she was very pleased with that. Then he asked the princess to marry him, and she said yes at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cBut you must come on Saturday,\u201d said the princess, \u201cfor the king and queen are coming to tea with me then. They will be very proud that I am going to marry a Turkish angel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">But you must have a very fine story ready, for my parents are very fond of stories. My mother likes them to be moral and high-toned, and my father likes them to be merry and something to laugh at.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cVery well,\u201d he replied, \u201cI shall bring no other wedding gift but a story.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">So they parted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">But the princess gave him a sword studded with gold coins, which he found very useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">He flew away to town, bought a new dressing-gown, and then went back to the forest to make up his story. It was not easy, and he had to work hard to get it ready by Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">By Saturday, however, the story was finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">The king and queen and all the court were at tea with the princess. He was received with great ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cWill you tell us a story?\u201d said the queen. \u201cOne that is deep and instructive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cYes, but something to laugh at too,\u201d said the king.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cCertainly,\u201d said the merchant\u2019s son, and he began his story. Now listen carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cThere was once a bundle of matches who were exceedingly proud of their high birth. Their family tree, that is to say the great pine tree from which they had been cut, had been a great old tree in the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">The matches now lay between a tinder-box and an old iron pot, and they told the story of their youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u2018Ah, those were the days!\u2019 they said. \u2018We grew on the green boughs, as green as they were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">Every morning and evening we drank diamond dew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">When the sun shone, we felt its warmth, and the little birds told us stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">We were rich too. The other trees only dressed in green in summer, but our family wore green all the year round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">But then the woodcutters came. It was like a great revolution. Our family was felled to the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">The head of the family was given a place as mainmast in a fine ship and sailed round the world as much as he pleased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">The other branches were sent to different places, and our task now is to kindle light for common people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">That is how people of quality come to be in a kitchen.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201c\u2018My history is quite different,\u2019 said the iron pot next to the matches. \u2018From the very first moment I came into the world I have been used to cooking and scrubbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">I am the first in the house for anything solid and useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">My only pleasure is to be well scoured after dinner and to stand in my place and have a sensible conversation with my neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">Except for the water bucket, which is sometimes carried into the yard, we all live here together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">We get our news from the shopping basket, who tells us things about the people and the government that are very disturbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">Yes, one day an old pot was so upset by what it heard that it fell down and smashed to pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">I can tell you, that pot was a liberal.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201c\u2018You talk too much,\u2019 said the tinder-box, and the steel struck the flint so that sparks flew. \u2018Can we not have a merry evening?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201c\u2018Yes, let us talk about those who are of the highest birth,\u2019 said the matches.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201c\u2018No, I don\u2019t like talking about myself all the time,\u2019 said the iron pot. \u2018Let us think of some amusement for the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">I will begin. I will tell of something that everyone has experienced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">That is easy and interesting. My goodness, how he kicked one leg in the air! It was burned.
