I was fooled once myself. The trouble those creatures gave me. They’re frightened of the water… I tell you. I quacked and I nipped, but nothing would make them go in. Leave it, dear. Go and teach your other children to swim.”

“I’ll sit a little longer,” said the mother.

“I’ve come this far. I may as well see it through to Midsummer.”

“As you like,” said the old duck, and waddled away.

At last the great egg cracked open.

“Peep!” said the little creature, tumbling out.

How big he was. In she went.

“Quack, quack!” she called, and one by one the ducklings leapt in after her. The water closed over their heads, but they rose at once and floated with perfect ease. Their legs paddled on their own. Every one of them，even the big, grey, ungainly one，swam along with the rest.

“No, not a turkey,” said the mother.

“See how beautifully he uses his legs，how straight he holds himself. Two families of ducks were fighting over the head of an eel, and in the end the cat got it.

“That is the way of the world,” said the mother, licking her bill，for she had wanted the eel-head herself.

“Now then, use your legs,” she said. “Mind your manners and bow your heads to that old duck over there. She is the most distinguished among us, of Spanish blood, which is why she is so stout. You see that red ribbon on her leg? It is a great honour. It means she is prized, and that all creatures, man and animal alike, must show her respect. Quack! Toes out, not in! A well-bred duckling keeps its feet wide apart, like mother and father. Good. Now bow your heads and say Quack!”

“Just look at that! More of them, as if we didn’t have enough already.

And that one… heavens, what an ugly creature! He needs to be put in his place.”

“What fine ducklings,” said the old duck with the ribbon. “All lovely, except for that one. A pity you cannot fix him.”

“That is beyond anyone’s power, Your Grace,” said the mother.

“He may not be handsome, but he has a good heart and swims as well as any of them, perhaps even better. He was too long in the egg. That is why he came out rather large.” She patted his neck and smoothed his feathers.

“And he is a drake,” she added.

“Looks matter less in a male. I believe he will grow strong and make his way in the world.”

“The others are charming,” said the old duck.

“Run along now, all of you. And if you find an eel’s head, bring it to me.”

And so they settled in. All of them except the poor duckling who had hatched last. He was bitten, pushed, and shoved，not only by the ducks but by the hens as well.

“What an overgrown lout,” they all said.

Even the turkey cock，born with spurs and convinced he was an emperor，puffed himself up like a ship in full sail and came bearing down on the duckling, gobbling furiously until he was scarlet in the face. The poor duckling did not know where to turn. He was wretched and ashamed，for being ugly, and for being the object of the whole farmyard’s contempt.

That was the first day. He shut his eyes and kept running.

At last he came to the great marsh where the wild ducks lived. Exhausted and wretched, he lay down among the reeds and spent the night there. In the morning the wild ducks flew over to inspect their new companion.

“What manner of creature are you?” they asked. The duckling turned his head this way and that, greeting them as best he could.

“You are remarkably ugly,” said the wild ducks.

“But that is no concern of ours，provided you do not wish to marry into our family.”

Poor creature. Marriage was the furthest thing from his mind. All he wanted was to lie quietly among the rushes and drink a little marsh water.

He stayed there for two whole days.

Then two wild geese arrived — or rather, two wild ganders, for they were both male.

They had not been out of the egg long, and were still full of high spirits.

“I say, friend，you are so ugly we rather like you.

Come with us and be a bird of passage. Nearby there is another marsh, and in it some charming wild geese，young ladies who know very well how to quack. With a face like yours, you might do surprisingly well.” Bang! Bang! Two shots rang out, and both ganders fell dead into the rushes, the water turning red. Bang! Bang! The guns fired again and again. The whole flock rose in alarm. Hunters were hidden all around the marsh,

some crouching in the reeds, others behind the trees,

some even perched on branches that overhung the water.

Blue smoke drifted like a low cloud from the dark woods across the marsh.

The dogs came splashing through the wetland, thrashing the rushes flat. The poor duckling was terrified.

He tucked his head beneath his wing. At that moment a great hunting dog appeared beside him. It thrust its wet muzzle close, bared its teeth and splashed away without touching him.

“Oh, thank heaven,” breathed the duckling.

“I am so ugly that even the dog will not bite me.”

He lay perfectly still while the shots rang out and the guns fired on. It grew quiet at last. But even then he did not dare to move for several hours more. When he finally raised his head and looked about him, he ran from the marsh as fast as he could.

He ran across fields and meadows. The wind blew hard against him.

By nightfall he came to a poor little cottage.

It was so tumbledown that it had never quite decided which way to fall. The wind blew fiercely. The duckling pressed himself against the ground so as not to be carried away. Then he noticed that one hinge of the door was broken, leaving a gap just wide enough to slip through. And so he crept inside.

An old woman lived there, with her cat and her hen.

The cat，whom she called Sonnie，could arch his back and purr, and even strike sparks when stroked the wrong way. The hen had such short, stumpy legs that she was called Chickabiddy Shortshanks. She laid good eggs, and the old woman loved her as dearly as if she were her own child.

In the morning the strange duckling was discovered at once. The cat began to purr and the hen to cluck.

“What on earth is this?” said the old woman, peering about，for her eyesight was poor, and she took the duckling for a large fat duck who had wandered in.

“What a piece of luck!” she said.

“Now I shall have duck’s eggs，provided it is not a drake. We shall see.”

Three weeks passed, and not one egg appeared. The cat was master of the house and the hen was mistress. They always said ‘we and the world,’ meaning themselves，and they believed they represented the better half of it.

The duckling thought there might be another view of the matter, but the cat would not hear of it.

“Can you lay eggs?” she demanded.

“No.”

“Then kindly hold your tongue.”

And the cat said: “Can you arch your back and purr，or strike sparks?”

“No.”

“Then keep your opinions to yourself when sensible people are speaking.”

The duckling sat in the corner, quite dispirited. Then one day he was overcome by a longing for fresh air, for open water, for the feeling of floating free. He could not keep it to himself, and told the hen.

“What on earth has got into you?” said the hen.

“You have nothing to do, that is your trouble. Lay some eggs, or learn to purr, and these fancies will pass.”

“But to float on the water,” said the duckling, “how wonderful that is.

To plunge beneath the surface and feel the water rush over your head!”

“A fine sort of pleasure, I’m sure,” said the hen.

“Ask the cat，the cleverest creature I know，whether he enjoys floating or diving. Or ask the old woman herself. There is no wiser person in the world. Do you imagine she would want to float on water?”

“You do not understand me,” said the duckling.

“If we don’t understand you, who does? Surely you don’t think yourself cleverer than the cat and the old woman，to say nothing of me? Be sensible, child. Be grateful. You have a warm roof and good company. Lay some eggs and learn to purr.”

“I think I must go out into the wide world,” said the duckling.

“Do as you please,” said the hen.

And so he went.

He floated on the water and dived beneath it. But everywhere he went he was shunned for his ugliness. Autumn came. The leaves turned gold and fell. The sky grew cold and heavy, full of snow. A raven sat hunched on a fence, croaking with cold. The very thought of it made you shiver.

The poor duckling had a very hard time of it.

One evening, just as the sun was going down and the sky turned pale, a flock of beautiful birds came sweeping out from among the reeds. The duckling had never seen anything so lovely. They were brilliant white, with long graceful necks. Swans. They called out with a strange, wild cry, spread their great wings, and flew away toward warmer lands and open water. They rose so high, so very high, that a feeling stirred in the duckling he could not name. He turned round and round on the water, stretching his neck toward the sky, watching until they were gone.

He could never forget those birds. Those beautiful, joyful birds.

When they disappeared from sight, he dived deep into the water. When he surfaced again something had shifted inside him. He did not know what birds they were or where they had gone, but he was drawn to them in a way he had never felt before.

He did not envy them.

How could he ever dream of such beauty for himself?

If only the ducks would tolerate him, accept him,

that would be enough.

That winter was bitterly cold. The duckling had to keep swimming to stop the water from freezing around him. But each night the open circle grew smaller. The cold deepened. The ice groaned. He paddled and paddled, on and on.

At last he could paddle no more.

He lay still.

The ice closed over him.

Early one morning a farmer came by.

He broke the ice open with his wooden clog, tucked the duckling under his arm, and carried him home to his wife. Warmth revived him. The children wanted to play, but the duckling, certain they meant to harm him, panicked. He flew straight into the milk-pail and splashed milk across the room. The woman screamed. He knocked over the butter-churn, scrambled into the meal-barrel and out again. The woman came at him with the fire-tongs. The children tumbled over each other laughing and shouting. The door was open. He fled into the bushes and lay down in the new-fallen snow.

He lay there, with no strength left at all.

All the hardship and misery he suffered through that long winter would be too sorrowful to tell.

When the sun grew warm again, he was lying in a marsh among the reeds.

The larks were singing. Spring had come.

Then, all at once, he spread his wings. They beat the air more powerfully than he had ever known, and carried him up and forward. Before he understood what was happening, he found himself in a great garden full of apple blossom, where the lilacs trailed their branches all the way down to the still water.

Oh, the sweetness of it.

Just ahead, three great white swans came gliding out from among the rushes. They moved upon the water so lightly, their feathers just stirring.

He knew them, those proud, noble birds, and a sadness he could not name rose inside him.

“I will fly to them. Those noble creatures. Even if they kill me for daring to come near, so be it.

But no matter.

Better to be killed by them than to be bitten by ducks, pecked by hens, and suffer another such winter.”

He flew out onto the water and swam toward the three swans. They saw him, and came rushing forward with raised wings.

“Kill me then,” said the poor duckling, and he bowed his head toward the water to receive his death.

But what did he see there, in that clear, still water?

His own reflection.

It was no longer the reflection of a clumsy, dark-grey ugly bird.
