He had a coat for every hour of the day, and just as people say of a king, \u201cHe is in council,\u201d so it was always said of him, \u201cThe emperor is in the dressing-room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">In the great city where he lived, life was cheerful. Strangers came every day. One day two swindlers arrived, saying they were weavers and that they could weave the most beautiful cloth imaginable. Yes, I must have this cloth woven for me at once.\u201d He paid the two swindlers a large sum in advance, and they set up their looms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">They set up two looms and pretended to work, but there was nothing whatever on the frames. But he recalled that anyone stupid or unfit would not be able to see the cloth. He believed he had nothing to fear for himself, yet thought it wiser to send someone else first. All the people in the city had heard of the cloth&#8217;s wonderful quality, and everyone was eager to find out how foolish his neighbour might be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cI will send my faithful old minister to the weavers,\u201d thought the emperor. \u201cHe can judge the cloth better than anyone, for he has sense, and no one is more fit for his post.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">So the good old minister went to the room where the two swindlers sat at their empty looms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">They were busy as ever, working away at nothing at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cHeaven preserve us,\u201d thought the old minister, opening his eyes very wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cI cannot see anything at all.\u201dBut he did not say so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">The two swindlers begged him to come closer, and asked whether the colours were not beautiful and the pattern exquisite. They pointed to the empty frames. The poor old minister looked and looked, but he could see nothing, for there was nothing to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cGood heavens,\u201d he thought, \u201cam I really so foolish? I have never suspected it, and no one must know. Am I unfit for my post? Yes, I shall tell the emperor that I am very pleased with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cWe are delighted to hear it,\u201d said both the weavers, and they named all the colours and described the pattern. The old minister listened carefully so that he could repeat their words to the emperor, and so he did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">The swindlers now demanded more money, more silk, and more gold thread. He fared no better: he looked and looked, but as there was nothing on the empty looms, he could see nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cIs not the cloth beautiful?\u201d asked the two swindlers, pointing to the empty frames. There was no pattern at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cI am not stupid,\u201d thought the official. \u201cI suppose I am not fit for my good post. That would be strange, but I must not let it show.\u201d So he praised the cloth he could not see and assured them of his delight. \u201cYes, it is truly lovely,\u201d he told the emperor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">All the people in the city were talking about the splendid cloth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">While the cloth was still on the loom, the emperor wished to see it himself. With a number of courtiers \u2014 including the two honest officials who had already visited \u2014 he went to the clever swindlers. This is terrible. Am I foolish? Am I not fit to be emperor? That would be the worst thing that could happen to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cOh, it is beautiful, it is enchanting,\u201d said the emperor, nodding his head with a satisfied air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">He gazed at the empty loom and would not say that he saw nothing. All the courtiers with him looked and looked, and though none of them could see anything, they all said, like the emperor, \u201cOh, it is truly beautiful.\u201d They advised him to wear the new clothes at the great procession which was soon to take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cSuperb! Exquisite! Perfect!\u201d went from mouth to mouth, and everyone was delighted. The emperor gave the two swindlers the title of Court Weavers, with an order to wear in their buttonholes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">The night before the procession the swindlers sat up with sixteen candles burning, working through the night. They pretended to take the cloth from the loom, cut the air with great scissors, sewed with needles that had no thread, and at last said, \u201cLook \u2014 the emperor\u2019s new clothes are ready.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">The emperor came with his most distinguished knights. Each swindler raised an arm as if holding something, saying: \u201cHere are the trousers. Here is the coat. Here is the cloak.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">And so on. \u201cThe cloth is as light as a spider\u2019s web. One would think one had nothing on,&nbsp;\u2014 and that is its great virtue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cQuite so,\u201d said all the knights. But they could see nothing, for there was nothing to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cWill it please your Majesty to take off your clothes,\u201d said the swindlers, \u201cso that we may dress you before the great mirror?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">The emperor took off all his clothes. The swindlers pretended to hand him each garment in turn, fussing about his waist as if fastening something on. The emperor turned and twisted before the mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cHow well they fit, how beautifully they are cut,\u201d said everyone. \u201cWhat a pattern, what colours! A magnificent suit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">&nbsp;\u201cThe canopy to be carried over your Majesty in the procession is waiting outside,\u201d said the chief master of ceremonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">\u201cYes, I am quite ready,\u201d said the emperor. \u201cDo my clothes fit well?\u201d He turned again before the mirror, as if truly admiring his fine suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">The chamberlains who were to carry the train stooped and groped along the floor as if lifting it. They walked holding their hands in the air, not daring to let anyone see that they could see nothing at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">And so the emperor walked in the procession under the magnificent canopy. All the people in the streets and at the windows said: \u201cHow beautiful the emperor\u2019s new clothes are! What a splendid train, how well they fit!&nbsp;\u201d Nobody would admit that he saw nothing, for that would have shown he was unfit, or very stupid. The emperor shivered, for it seemed they were right.
